John (Jack) Hugh and Jenny (Ginny) EVANS Researching my grandfather John (Jack) Evans who was born in Llanidloes approximately 1893. I've little information at the moment although I am hopeful of tracing his parents. Jack moved to Merthyr Tydfil to find work where he married my grandmother Edith in 1926. There was quite an age gap between them Edith was 16 and Jack was 32. They had four surviving children, Sarah Jean (Jean), Richard Thomas (Ritchie), John and Megan. Jack went into the army (date unknown at this time) where he became a Sargeant and was invalided out and died on 5th October 1940. (he died of throat cancer and not of an injury due to war). Edith remarried to Idris (Big Idris) Rees and they had two surviving children, Idris (Jnr) and Anne. Jack had a brother Hugh (Hughie) who was the postman of Rhayder and later became postmaster. His wife owned a shop at Highbury, North Street, Rhayader (which is now Intrim (Hair & Beauty) & Co). Their son Idwel owned a taxi business and had some sort of Cottage behind the now Bike Shop (next door to the Library). Jack's siter Jenny emigrated to America *possibly Ohio) as her husband was a Ploughman and work was available for him there (he is believed to have gone blind in later years). When my grandfather Jack passed away Jenny wrote to a Mr Hamer who knew both families as she intended to send Jack's children money. Whatever was written in the return letter to Jenny made her sever all ties with her family in Merthyr Tydfil. If this story rings any bells with you please feel free to email me.
