My grandfather was Alfred Edward Hill, born in Soho in 1889 and killed in the Dardanelles in the 1st World War. His father was Frederick Edward Hill- born about 1865 in London (possibly Bethnal Green)and described as a house painter. He was married to Mary Anne Mitchell and they had at least 3 other children, Elizabeth b 1889 (was she a twin?), George b1893 and Frederick b 1895. At the time of the 1901 census, Alfred was visiting (living with?) the Stone family (Henry and Amelia) and is described as their nephew. The Stone's address at the time of the census was 13 Clarence Gdns. The Hill's address is given as 17 Clarendon Place, St Pancras. We have no knowledge of any of Alfred's family - my grandmother did not seem to keep in touch after he was killed. |
