Trying to find further information on the MOORE families of South-West England. I've traced hundreds of MOOREs in the Bristol area back to JAMES MOORE (c.1803-1877) a cordwainer (shoe-maker) who was born in Alverdiscott, near Barnstaple, N. Devon and came to Bristol with his wife Sarah before the 1830s, producing at least 9 children and dozens of grandchildren there, many of the boys also becoming boot/shoe-makers around the St. Philip, St. Paul, St. George and Bedminster districts of Bristol. His eldest son, James MOORE (c.1832-1908), a well-known shoe-maker in the Newtown area, married three times and had 8 children. His sons William MOORE, John MOORE, James MOORE and Henry MOORE were also shoe-makers. His other son, SAMUEL MOORE (1848-1931) was a shoe-maker in Trinity St. His sons Arthur MOORE and James Henry MOORE (my grandfather) were hairdressers. Of his daughters, Louisa Hannah married Alfred William Alfred LEAKEY, a cellarman; Gertrude Tabitha married William John THOMAS, a carpenter from Penzance, Cornwall; and Lilian Amy married Reginald Sidney CHANDLER, whose father was an undertaker. I'd love to make contact with other members of this extended MOORE family from the Bristol area, and would also welcome any help in tracing the family tree back to its roots in North Devon in 1800 and before.
