Hi I was hoping you could help me solve this mystery I have found my Great grandfather Francis Goodwin on the 1881 census aged 23, 1891 census aged 33 and on the 1901 census called frank aged 43. all stating he born in Leicestershire I found his marriage certificate to Lois in March 1879 aged 20. From this I worked out he was born during the last few weeks of March 1859. His father is also listed as Francis. This is where the mystery sets in. I have completely searched the BMD registers to find nothing. I have searched the 61 and 71 census but there is noone listed as father and son together with the same name born in Leicestershire around the time.He seems to have appeared from 1879 where was he before then !!!! Where else can I look. Please help Anne

Hi Zoe, I was just going to delete my thread as I think I've worked out the answer but then thought it might help other newbies like me to think of various permutations! My William Briggs wasn't born in St Chartford, Bedfordshire in 1826 According to the 1861 Census he was born in ST CHART, ASHFORD, KENT! heaven only knows how Bedfordshire came into it. He also manages to knock a few years off his age along the way. When he and Harriett were first married there was a difference of 5 years between them - in the 1871 Census 8 years - in the1881, 19 years - 1891, 10 years. Harriett dies in 1900 at the age of 66 and William dies in 1909 at the age of 90, bringing them back to their correct birth ages! Phew! Only taken me about half a day to work it out! Many thanks for reading my post. Cherry

Hi Zo, I just can't for the life of me work this one out and hope you might cast your all seeing eyes over it! This my William BRIGGS in 1881 Elizabeth Brigs abt 1865 Fishersgate, Sussex, England Daughter Fishersgate 2 Laylands Rd, Southwick, Sussex, England View Record Harriet Brigs abt 1836 Fishersgate, Sussex, England Wife Fishersgate 2 Laylands Rd, Southwick, Sussex, England View Record James Brigs abt 1864 Fishersgate, Sussex, England Son Fishersgate 2 Laylands Rd, Southwick, Sussex, England View Record William Brigs abt 1817 Shorncliff, Kent, England Head Fishersgate 2 Laylands Rd, Southwick, Sussex, England This should be him in 1871 but he's got the wrong wife but all the right sons and daughters. (I know these were all their children from a rellies info) Elizabeth Briggs abt 1866 Southwick, Sussex, England Daughter Southwick Sussex View Record Emma Briggs abt 1868 Southwick, Sussex, England Daughter Southwick Sussex View Record George Briggs abt 1861 Brighton, Sussex, England Son Southwick Sussex View Record James Briggs abt 1864 Portslade, Sussex, England Son Southwick Sussex View Record Luley Briggs abt 1863 Southwick, Sussex, England Daughter Southwick Sussex View Record Margaret Briggs abt 1834 Wivelsfield, Sussex, England Wife Southwick Sussex View Record William Briggs abt 1826 St Chartford, Bedfordshire, England Head Southwick Sussex This is him on 1901 back to the right age, right wife and place of birth! William Briggs abt 1818 Chatham, Kent, England Head Portslade Sussex Harriett Briggs abt 1828 Ditchling, Sussex, England Wife Portslade Sussex View Record James Briggs abt 1863 Portslade, Sussex, England Son Portslade Sussex . Shall I assume that William and Harriet went on a world cruise leaving the kids with rellies or shall I keep looking for them under mistranscribed names? As an example here's my Grandad, James Arthur Briggs transcribed as Buggs on the 1891 with his Mum called Mary instead of Annie! George W Buggs abt 1885 Southwick, Sussex, England Son Southwick Sussex View Record James A Buggs abt 1887 Southwick, Sussex, England Son Southwick Sussex View Record Mary A Buggs abt 1862 Lancing, Sussex, England Wife Southwick Sussex View Record George Buggs abt 1861 Brighton, Sussex, England Head Southwick Sussex Whaddya 'fink. Many, many thanks. Cherry

Hi Zoe, many thanks for your offer, I have my George Nicholls, born 1846, in Waterbeach cambs, father Abraham, Mother Sarah, all living together in Waterbeach during 1851 and 1861census, but in 1871 census, I can only find Abraham living as a boarder, the rest of the family seem to have dissappeared, George is my GG/dad, this is why I am looking for him. Hi Zoe, My goodness, many many thanks for your research into my problem, i will work on the fact that Sarah must have died between 1861 and 1871 census, again many thanks for your help.
