Marianne Report 24 Jan 2006 18:32

I am trying to find information on my husband's paternal grandmother. Jesse/Jessie Holtham was born between 1874-1878 in or around Gloucester. She married Alfred Bick in 1898 and had 4 children; Percival (1899) Frances, Lionel (1904) and Doris (1909). Jess died in 1943 in Gloucester, last address was Treadworth Road, Gloucester. Does anyone have information on the Holtham family and where they come from? Many thanks Marianne Bick

Hopefuly by purchasing Jessies Marriage Cert you'd have her father recorded : Marriages Jun 1898 Bick Alfred Gloucester 6a 536 Holtham Jessie Gloucester 6a 536 Going by the info found for 1891 this MIGHT be her birth: Births Dec 1878 Holtham Jessie Cheltenham 6a 452

With the same 1879 dob and place of birth Cheltenham on 1891 and 1881 I went back to 1881 to check out Jesse, son. The image clearly says Jesse and son, but I wondered if this was an error and the enumerator wrote down Jesse as a lad's name because he knew it and just asked the age without checking sex of child. Rest of household: RG11/2576 111 p.33 8 Commercial Street, Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, Sarah Ann Holtham abt 1854 Lower Guiting, Glos, Head laundress [column with marital condition is difficult to read, and could say wid, but I think it says Mar] Francis S. Holtham abt 1876 Cheltenham, Son scholar Jesse Holtham abt 1879 Cheltenham,Son

Think this might be Jessie in 1881, although the spelling is wrong and has been entered as son instead of daughter:- Francis S. Holtham abt 1876 Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, England Son 8 Commercial Street, Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, England ***Jesse Holtham*** abt 1879 Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, England Son 8 Commercial Street, Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, England Sarah Ann Holtham abt 1854 Lower Guiting, Gloucestershire, England Head 8 Commercial Street, Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, England Kath. x

First of all a big thank-you to all for your advice. Since first posting my request I have obtained both birth and marriage certificates for my Jessie Holtham.

Jessie Holtham was born 4th December 1878: Her birth certificate records only her mother: Sarah Holtham, Laundress, Lacey's Court, Exmouth Street, Cheltenham - whether or not Sarah was a single mother or married is not clear.

Jessie Holtham married Alfred Bick on 18 June 1898 at St James Church in Gloucester. The marriage certificate records her as follows: Jessie Holtham, age 20, Spinster, Laundress, Residence Percy Street, Father: Norman Holtham, Labourer.

As I have a comprehensive tree for the BICK family. My search is now concentrating on my Jessie Holtham's parents:
Norman Holtham - where, when was he born, married, died?
Sarah Holtham? - again where, when was she born, is this her maiden name, if not what was she called prior to marrying Norman?

Would appreciate any pointers in the right direction.
Many thanks
Marianne

I think this might be Sarah Holtham in the 1871 census as an unmarried servant, which would make Holtham her maiden name. Jessie may have just "made up" a father for her marriage certificate to save face with the in-laws (this happened a lot). The head of the household was a launderess, so perhaps Sarah was trained as a launderess at a later date.

Name: Sarah Holtham
Age: 17

I can't find any trace of a Norman Holtham old enough to be Jessie's father.

Kathleen
A belated thank you for your information. You could be right regarding Jessie making up her father's name to save face. I cannot find a Norman Holtham either born within 30 years of Jessie's birth. I may have to concentrate on Sarah Ann instead.
Again many thanks.

Hi Marianne,

After reading this thread, I decided to look to see if Sarah A Holtham married. Interestingly, I've found a marriage in 1891, district of Gloucester, Q3, 6a 502

There are two possible males she could have married (if this is of course her!) - a William Franklin and.......wait for it....a Henry NORMAN!

If this is the correct marriage for your Sarah and she did indeed marry Mr Norman - it could well explain why Jessie called her father Norman Holtham - her step-father's surname!!! (to hide her illigetimacy, sp?!!)

Hi Helen
Thanks for your info. A while back someone else suggested Henry Norman as Jessie's possible father but I did not think it right, as I thought it was wrong. But looking at it the way you put it, it could well be true after all. This could all well explain why we find Jessie in the 1891 census in an institution for girls, in Newark House, Hempstead, Gloucestershire.
Thanks again
Marianne
