On his marriage certificate it states his father was Charles Lane, deceased, coachman. It seems strange that theres's no birth record nor does he appear on previous census records which does indicate he had another name. I don't know where to go from here with this:( Bev

Yes, but if she married after he was born, he would have taken that name in the next two censuses. She might've been the Lane. So when he came to marry, he reverted back to her name. I have quite a few who did that. Still doesn't explain why there's no birth record for him, but it may be that he was never registered. It wasn't compulsory till 1875.

If a child was illegitamate wouldn't he have taken the mother's name?I've got no hope in finding him when the 1911 census comes out either as he left his children after his wife died (around 1906) as was said to have 'run away to London!' Bev

Bev, I'm still looking :) How annoying that he's nowhere before 1901. I'm wondering if he was illegitimate, and his mother married after he was born, which is why we can't find him on the censuses. Charles Lane, Coachman is a popular person, as you can see from the few I found lol

Bev Report 1 Nov 2005 09:19

Thanks again for your help, Tracy, I'm really grateful. His marriage was definitely 1896 to Sarah Baker Wilson. That and the 1901 census info is all I can be absolutely sure about. I'm beginning to think I'll never find him. I think the birth must be Crewkerne but I couldn't find it. Bev

Tracy Thanks for the help. I am glad its not just me that is confused by this family. Perhaps I will have more luck when I get back the marriage cert. for Benjamin Ward and Mary Sharp. The dates all seem a bit off to me maybe there is some sort of family coverup. If you come across any more information to help I would be most grateful. regards kathy

Kelly, my records only go up to 1920, and there is no records of a marriage (other than the one to Elizabeth) before that.

Janice, I don't know what you want me to do. I have looked and I couldn't find anything. Why not ask the GRO to have a look. They will charge you, but at least you'll know either way.

Jeremiah married Mary Fleming in England we think but it could have been in Wales? Theres no real proof that they were ever married? We know he was previously married to a lady called Elizabeth HodgKiss and they had a child called Kate E . My nan would love to know if he was still married to this lady when meeting his mum or had she died? I believe Mary was 50/51 when she died in 1943 so that would have made her birth year 1891/92!! there was a lady on this website who found a possible birth of Mary Ann Fleming in June 1895 BATH 5c 572...?? thanks kelly

Andrea, since he wasn't registered until Dec qtr, he won't be on the census which was taken in April. I can't, however, find him anywhere on the censuses except 1901.
