Thanks for your prompt reply Ellen. Regards Marcia

Ellen Report 8 May 2005 13:44

Marcia Moses is showing as a widower on the 1881 census, so Mary died before then. You need to go onto scotlandspeople to search for her death pre 1881. As the children were born in Scotland, it would follow that she died in Scotland. I can't imagine that there are loads of Mary Corbetts dying younger than 48, so she should not be too expensive to find. good Luck Ellen.

Marcia Report 8 May 2005 13:30

Hi Ellen I'm guessing that Mary Corbett nee Hill was born around 1833 possibly in Ireland, but not sure, so we are looking at about age 48. According to IGI her first child was born in 1862. He was named William. But as she went on to have another William in 1867, I suspect the first William died. According to the 1881 census her children were Thomas Corbett b. 1863, Margaret Corbett b. 1865 and William Corbett b. 1867, all apparently born in Motherwell, Lanark, Scotland. Her husband Moses was listed as aged 48, Ironwork Labourer, b. Ireland, however, her name does not seem to appear. Kind regards, Marcia

Ellen Report 8 May 2005 09:54

Marcia There are a few elderly Mary Corbetts. You'll need to remind me of some of the details. What sort of ballpark age do you expect her to be? Whereabouts in the country? And some of her children's names, as she may be living with one of them. what did Moses do for a living, as it sometimes says eg 'Mason's widow'. Regards Ellen.

Marcia Report 8 May 2005 09:47

Dear Ellen You have helped me previously with my Jardine/Allan, Wardrope/Corbett families. By searching on IGI I have found the name of Moses Corbett's wife as being MARY HILL. I was wondering if there was any information on the census about her. I've a feeling she may have died by 1881, but am not sure. Kind regards, Marcia

Hi Ellen Re Arthur Watson: In 1891 he was found living in workhouse. His wife Mary Ann was in Barrow in Furness in 1881 & 1891 with children married but with no husband. I have reason to beleive they had spearated. Wherevever he was he was not with his family. John Watson you found not his brother all his brothers were dead. He must be one of many that dissapeared off of the 1881 census. There are not many other ways of mistranscribing his name !! Many thanks Pauline

Ellen

Ellen Report 7 May 2005 09:16

Okay Pauline we're going to have to try this another way, as he must be mistranscribed somewhere. Give me what you know about his family. If we find them, we could find him somewhere close by, or even living with them, with his name spelt wrong. Where was he in 1891, do you know? Do you know: children, siblings, parents? Names, dates/places of birth, occupations? There's a John Watson born Cumbernauld in 1822, a weaver. could he be a brother? Regards Ellen.

Ellen Thanks very much for your help - I think the first family is mine, but I noted the name was spelled 'Porteus' and not 'Porteous' - My grandmother was 'Porteous' so it must have been registered wrongly at some time! Ellen, can you tell me what the 'U' after Henrietta Porteus stands for? Regards Elaine

Pauline Sorry - no sign of Arthur anywhere in the country (Scotland or rest of UK) What else do you know about him? Where did you get the info he would be 57 in 1881? How do you know he was born Cumbernauld? If you have any more info I'm happy to look again. Regards Ellen.
