Hi,
Jane Watson, born Springfield in 1843 was the daughter of William and Sarah Watson. Jane lived with her parents at least until she was 18. The census for 1851 and 1861 shows her there.

I cannot find any trace of her after 1861 but I guess she married after she had given birth to William Pattison Watson.

Jane's father was born in Bermondsey/Southwark, Surrey in c.1815 and her mother was born in Springfield, Essex in c.1812.

William was a "beerhouse keeper" and "journeyman woolstapler" and the family lived at 1 Randulph Terrace, Springfield in 1851 which was a public house called the Red Lion Inn. William and his wife Sarah were still living there in 1881.

Jane had 3 sisters and 3 brothers shown in the 1851 census.

If you need the full details, please give me a call.

Best wishes.

Fred.

In 1871 Jane is indexed as Waton in District Essex County Gaol in Springfield.

No not as an inmate ;-) she is described as Under Matron and Goal Officer.

A Jane Watson married Dec 1879 Chelmsford Volume 4a page 379, a Romeo George Rice is on the same page.

On the 1881 census in 37 Springfield Terrace, Chelmsford:

George Rice c1832 Aldgate, Whitesmith Journeyman
Jane c1843 Springfield
George c1860 Hackney
William c1865 Chelmsford
Ernest c1871 Chelmsford

Note in 1871 George is married to an Ann c1838 Kent.

In 1891 George is working as an Engineer for HM Prisons.

In 1901 Jane is a widow living with her nephew and step grandson.
