Would he have had a middle name? There is this birth on the partially transcribed index (but it's not complete):-

Name: John Robert Farrell
Year of Registration: 1901
Quarter of Registration: Jan-Feb-Mar
District: Middlesbrough (1875-1968)
County: Yorkshire - North Riding
Volume: 9d
Page: 561

If you know who the parents should be you could order the certificate giving their names as checking points.

Do you know when and where he died as this looks like the death for the one who's birth I found:-

Name: John Robert Farrell
Birth Date: 8 Feb 1901
Death Registration Month/Year: Feb 1988
Age at death (estimated): 87
Registration district: Hackney
Inferred County: London
Volume: 12
Page: 1362

The death certificate may give you a relative's name and address if it happened to be a relative who was the informant.
