Caroline. Thanks for trying. I dont think Ann could be Mary Ellen's mother. 53 seems a bit old!!!
I have since found my father (James H. Mitchell b1900) first marriage certificate (1931). It says that his father Robert A Mitchell was deceased and that he had a stepfather called George (no surname). I cant even find Robert's death or Mary Ellen Mitchell marrying George. I will just have to keep trying or wait until 1911 census!!!!!!!

I have found Mary Ellen Mitchell on the following 1901 Census detail:
4 Winchester House, St.Bartholomew, Salford
Head of house: Joseph Valentine age 48 railway porter born Manchester
Mary. wife 48 born Manchester
Robert A Mitchell, brother-in-law, 33 railway inspector, born Cockermouth, Cumberland
Mary E Mitchell,sister 28, born Darlington, Durham
James H Mitchell, nephew, 1 born Salford, Lancashire.
I have checked various census forms for the Valentine family but Mary Ellen doesn't appear on them...Joseph's parents were Ann and Thomas. Thomas appears on the 1871 census but Ann is listed as a widow on 1881 If Ann is Mary Ellen's mother as 1901 census suggests then she would have been 53 when Mary Ellen was born!

Hi, Am trying to find details about my Grandmother, Mary Ellen Walker b. 1873 in Darlington. She married Robert Alexander Mitchell in 1899 in Salford Lancashire. Marriage certificate states her father was Thomas Walker (deceased) occupation shipbuilders labourer. Any information would be appreciated. Julie
