This is my grandma who did not name her father on her marriage cert in 1919. Married name is Birchall, died in 1950 in when living in Atholl St/Rd in Whalley Range Manchester.

My dad thinks she was a foundling and connected to a family called Tipping.

hi
Found this on 1901 census, no father listed so it's a possibility but the mother has marked herself as married on the actual transcript, also this was obviously transcribed incorrectly as the name is clearly shepherd on the transcript;

Usually in the case of a father not being named it is because the child is illegitimate. If a couple are not married the father has to be present at the registration for his name to go on the certificate, otherwise a woman could name anyone as the father! If the father refused to be present or refused to believe he was the father, or if the mother didn't know who the father was 'father's name' is left blank or has 'unknown' written in the space. (Even if the mother knows full well who the father is some registrars cruelly wrote 'unknown', thus stigmatising the woman further.)
