Looking for information on Esther Emilia Hill, b 1866. Believed to have lived in Barnados. She later fostered numerous children in Ilford area. Died in 1932. Not much else to go on, but please get in touch if you can help. Thanks.

Was Hill her maiden name? Do you have a rough idea where she was born?

If you think she might be this one:

Name: Esther E Hill
Year of Registration: 1866
Quarter of Registration: Apr-May-Jun
District: Marylebone (1837-1901)
County: London, Middlesex
Volume: 1a
Page: 507

You can order up the certificate and get her parents' names -- if that's a thing you're wanting to know.

There are two other possibilities, that is, if you don't already know her actual date and place of birth -- and if Hill was her birth surname:

Name: Amelia Esther Hill
Year of Registration: 1868
Quarter of Registration: Oct-Nov-Dec
District: Marylebone (1837-1901)
County: London, Middlesex
Volume: 1a
Page: 569

Name: Esther Amelia Hill
Year of Registration: 1859
Quarter of Registration: Jul-Aug-Sep
District: Stroud (1837 Onw)
County: Gloucestershire
Volume: 6a
Page: 258

And you can do the search that finds them, yourself, at FreeBMD --

Not many choices in the censuses -- this looks like your girl in 1871:

Name: Esther E Hill
Age: 3
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1868
Relation: Granddaughter
Mother's Name: Betsy
Gender: Female
Where born: London, England

Civil Parish: Wooburn
Ecclesiastical parish: Wooburn
Town: Wooburn
County/Island: Buckinghamshire
Country: England

Registration district: Wycombe
Sub-registration district: High Wycombe
ED, institution, or vessel: 10
Household schedule number: 188

Betsy Hill 43 - widowed
Esther E Hill 3
Esther Shervill 72 - farm labourer
Richard Shervill 72

I have Hills in my family -- I'd long known that I had to search for Moncks as Mouck and Mouch and Morck and Monak and Morek, but it was quite some time before I realized I had to search for Hills as Hell and Hile and Hele. So I did, when looking for Esther. No more results.

Here is apparently that same Esther in 1881:

Name: Esther E. Hill
Age: 13
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1868
Relation: Visitor
Gender: Female
Where born: High Holborn, Middlesex, England

Civil Parish: Leicester St Margaret
County/Island: Leicestershire
Country: England

Street address: 102 Oxendon St

Registration district: Leicester
Sub-registration district: East Leicester
ED, institution, or vessel: 19

Arthur E. Carter 3
Emily Carter 36
George N. Carter 6
John H. Carter
Walter Carter 1
William Carter 32
William E. Carter 4
Esther E. Hill 13
F. Jeffs 74

Emily Carter in that household:

Name: Emily Carter
Age: 36
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1845
Relation: Wife
Spouse's Name: William
Gender: Female
Where born: Wooburn, Buckinghamshire, England

might well be an aunt.

Likely her mother's marriage:

Name: Betsy Shirvill
Year of Registration: 1864
Quarter of Registration: Jul-Aug-Sep
District: Lambeth
County: Greater London, London, Surrey
Volume: 1d
Page: 491

-- Frederick Hill is one of two grooms on the page.

Probably time to pause until we see whether this looks like the right Esther. Deborah?

Wot the heck.

This would be her in 1891:

Name: Esther E Hall -- clearly says Hill
Age: 25
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1866
Relation: Servant
Gender: Female
Where born: London, England

Civil Parish: Paddington
Ecclesiastical parish: St James
County/Island: London
Country: England

Registration district: Paddington
Sub-registration district: St John Paddington
ED, institution, or vessel: 5

Elizabeth Hall 37 (that one is Hall)
Esther E Hall 25
Emeline C Janson 41
Fredk Arthur Janson 36
Fredk H Janson 78
Lucy C Janson 23
Henry Augustus Jennes 44
Emma Kearsey 28
Mary Milburn 31
Grace May Mitchell 18
Ethel M Pritchard 16
Stanley Rushton 17

And in 1901:

Name: Esther Hill
Age: 34
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1867
Relation: Head
Gender: Female
Where born: Bethnal Green, London, England

Civil Parish: West Ham
Ecclesiastical parish: St Andrew
County/Island: Essex
Country: England

Registration district: West Ham
Sub-registration district: Canning Town
ED, institution, or vessel: 49
Household schedule number: 219

Esther Hill 34 - no occupation shown
Henry Warren 28 - mariner

So if that is your Esther Hill, that's her story thus far.

Kathryn & Lindy, sorry, but following computer crash, only now back up and running. Thanks all for your efforts, now back on the case. Lots to look into now. Is she of any interest to either of yourselves. If not a special thanks!
We actually have no idea of where she was born, we only know that she lived in Saxon Road Ilford, and died aged 66 in 1932.
She must be one of those you've found.....surely....

Best Wishes, Debbie

Nah, not related; we're just part of the corps of intermeddling helpers hereabouts.

My Hills are in Devon/Cornwall in the early 1800s, so if we're related, it's somewhere back around the conquest, and likely not even then. ;)

If you come up with any other info or questions, feel free to post 'em!
