Hi, I am looking for any information on my grandad Albert Edward Evans. I believe he was born in Manchester. He had siblings Arthur, Sydney (a Salvation Army Officer) Will and Ella. He married Sarah Ellen Davies about 1926. They were both training as Salvation Army Officers. My grandad was a lay preacher in and around Abergavenny. They had four children, Margaret Sarah, Albert, Sydney & Denis.I also believe his fathers name was William. I am having no luck finding any information. I would really be very grateful for any help.
Regards

Hi Pauline -- I'll assume it's your grandad's forebears you're looking for!

Danged common name, unfortunately, and without knowing a year of birth it would be next to impossible to identify him in the birth registrations. So you have to start slow.

Here are the details of his marriage:

Albert E. Evans
spouse: Davies
District: Conway
Apr-June quarter 1926
vol: 11b
page: 842

Found it by reading the images for each quarter of 1926 and looking for the names in the list -- fortunately, you had the right year! Double-checked by finding the entry for Sarah E. Davies, for whom the details match.

Now you order his marriage certificate, and hopefully that will give you his age and his father's name; then you can try to go back from there.

These are the Albert Edward Evans-s born in Manchester between 1890 and 1910, the likely time period with some thrown in for good measure:

Albert Edward Evans 1902 Oct-Nov-Dec
Albert Edward Evans 1902 Oct-Nov-Dec
Albert Edward Evans 1903 Oct-Nov-Dec

I checked, and despite the similarities, they seem to be three different people (as compared to one person with corrected entries in FreeBMD's database, e.g., which sometimes happens.)

Since he may not have been born in Manchester, or his middle name may not have been included when his birth was registered, there may be many more candidates. No point in ordering any until you know what you're looking for -- i.e. father's name.

If the age at marriage matches one of them -- and unfortunately, it would pretty much match all three of them! -- you can order a certificate or certificates to see whether the father's name matches. And actually, you can request a reference check for a little extra when you order, and just get the one (or ones) with the matching father's name, I think.

Then you'll have both parents' names, from the birth cert, and you can look for the parents' marriage and look for them in the 1901 census ... and so on back.

Hi Kathryn B, Many thanks for finding the marriage certificate for my grandad Albert Edward Evans & Sarah Ellen Davies.
Pop's birthday is 11/06/1902 and he died 11/05/1977. My grandmother's birthday is 25/11/1902 and she died 01/06/1958 at 56 years old. I know she was born in Wales and i thought it was LLandudno but i am not sure any more.

Hi, I have found out that my grandad Albert Edward Evans was born in Bargoed. His fathers name was Robert James Evans and I believe his wifes name was Sarah. I hope you can help.
