I have looked for Robert Theyer in 1851. He is listed as Robert Thayer, a lodger, an ag lab, and widowed (which may be why the children aren't with him):

Hi Angela,
That looks hopeful. In 1881 he only says he is from Somerset and it does not seem to be a very common name. I will give it some more investigation with this alternative spelling.

I have found
THEYER GEORGE 19 Newton Abbot, Torquay
in 1861 census in G.R. He is 38 in the 1881 but I cannot find his birth in FreeBMD.
I am keen to find his parents and wondered whether he might be with them in 1861 please?
