I wonder whether brother Joseph was born just before the parents were married:

Name: Joseph Wilson
Year of Registration: 1915
Quarter of Registration: Jan-Feb-Mar
Mother's Maiden Name: Wilson
District: Wigan
County: Greater Manchester, Lancashire
Volume: 8c
Page: 88

The birth cert would give that Joseph's mother's name.

Mary -- that's all the info you have now, but more info may have been found.

Michelle gave you a marriage record:

Name: Mary E Wilson
Name: Joseph Jackson
Year of Registration: 1915
Quarter of Registration: Jan-Feb-Mar
District: Manchester (1837-1924)
County: Lancashire
Volume: 8d
Page: 354

That matches closely with the info you have. In fact, it is identical to the information you have for their names.

It's much more likely that the name is Wilson than that it is Nilson or Milson.

If you order that marriage certificate, you could see where they were married and thus whether it matches your info -- that they were Roman Catholic.

Why not do that instead of continuing to dither about the name on the birth certificate??

The only information I have is Mary's Birth certificate. Mary's father was Joseph Jackson and was a market Porter and Mary's mum was Mary Ellen and her maiden name is stated on the certificate. The first letter is confusing and after having several people look at it we still can't establish if it is a W or an N and someone even suggested M so I have 3 possibilities of Wilson, nilson or Milson! I know that Mary's brother Joseph was 6 when she was born which means he was born in 1915. I also know that they were catholic

And for William and Robert (surname Jackson, mother Wilson, born after 1915 and before 1922) there are multiple possibilities for each -- and no two of Mary Ellen, that Joseph or any of the Williams and Roberts were born in the same registration district.

Is it possible that her older brothers were born before the marriage of her parents, to one of them only?

Getting their ages and previous marital status from the marriage certificate could help answer that question.

You have saved this record to My Ancestry (Shoebox).

Looks like a match to me if maiden name correct. The marriage cert cost £7 will give detail of there fathers names and occupation and they could then be traced back on the 1841-1901 census.

I am trying to find a family history on behalf of someone I care for.
Mary Ellen Jackson was born in 1922 and I am trying to find some family history for her. She had 3 brothers
William, Robert and Joseph. All older than her.
Her parents were Mary Ellen and Joseph Jackson. They lived on John Street in Ancoats Manchester.
Mary was taken away from her family when she was 4 years old and I am trying to find a link.
I have come to a dead end as the maiden name of her mother is slightly confusing. She was either a WILSON or a NILSON.
