Sorry, it is Maria who is showing as Emma Turner. I received another birth certificate today for another of her children and it also states her as Emma.

sorry - is it Maria or her eldest child who is shown as Emma Turner?

Hello

I am still trying to find Maria. I purchased the birth cert but it is not her. The fathers name is different. I then purchased a copy of her eldest childs birth cert and on it she is shown as Emma Turner. Again, I can't come up with anything. Any ideas?

Sorry, just struck me - take it you couldnt find a suitable birth registration on freebmd? I assumed you had looked and not found one as it wasnt compulsory til 1875.

Ive had a quick look and though none jump out as Southwark, the closest would appear to be this one in Lambeth.:(Born late 55 she would still appear as aged 25 in April 1881 - hence ancestry would estimate 1856 as her birth year). You could take a chance on buying it from GRO online for £7 specifying a father called Edward, a mariner? Then youd get some money refunded if its wrong?)

Yes saw that one which is why I queried the birth being in Southwark. Then when we were told Edward was a mariner, I discounted it on two counts, wrong birth place and wrong occupation. This guy is a carman. But here are the details anyway (lot older than wife)

Name: Edward Turner
Age: 52
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1819
Relation: Head
Spouse's Name: Maria
Gender: Male
Where born: Guildford, Surrey, England

Country: England

Thanks Heather, never thought of that. I don't know her mothers name and am hoping the death cert will tell me.

You have given me renewed hope.

Kind regards
Helen

But it says Southwark as her place of birth in 1881. Dont worry, Im sure it will come to light :) It may be dad died when she was very young and mum remarried and so she appears under a different surname?

Hi Heather, no I can't find her as a child. She only seem to show from when she married Geroge Gosling. They married in 1878 and she shows up on the 1881 census. There is no one alive who knows anything about her.

The residence is Paris Street for both of them, the fathers occup for George Gosling was Labourer and for Edward Turner Mariner.

Witnesses names Harriet Richardson and Thos Nettlefold, they married at The Parish Church in the Parish of St. Mary Lambeth in the County of Surrey on 22 April 1878.

I am just really stuck.

Have you found her as a child on the 1861 or 1871?

On the marriage cert, what is the residence address, the fathers occupation and the witnesses names and where did they marry.

How do you know Maria was born in southwark - where did you find that info so we can follow backwards as I cant see a Maria Turner who fits at the mo.

Hi Sue

I have the marriage certificate and the father of Maria Turner is Edward Turner (Deceased) and George Gosling is John Gosling. That is all the information available.

Hello, I am trying to find information on the parents and grand parents of a Maria Turner who was born in Southwark UK abt 1856. She married George Gosling and immigrated to Australia in 1888.

Kind regards Helen
