You need to meet FreeBMD!

http://www.freebmd.org.uk

search for

marriage
surname: robinson
given name: alexander
spouse's surname: palmer
1909

It should be quick as a wink. I'll try it out too, but you will have to do that yourself anyway so you can look at the image and make sure all the numbers are correct, to order the marriage certificate.

(I don't know anything about getting certificates from local offices, but it's easy to order on line.)

I've realized you must have the GRO info already or you wouldn't know the quarter of registration, e.g. ;)

http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates

is where to go, to order on line. It's painless.

I think Joanne's problem was that she tried to use the GRO ref at the Register office.

your best bet is to order from the GRO in Southport, try this link

http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/research/orderingcertificates/index.asp

I assume you found the marriage in the index but the 1909 quarter (March) and the volume and page number given does not help you get a copy certificate from the local register office, they are GRO references and if you order online you will get your certificate very quickly for £7.
