Thomas Turner (b 1801- in Hampshire) was living in St. Kitts, (West Indies) married a local girl (Ann) and had 3 children - James (b1859) , Mary (b.1862) and Alfred (b.1864). They were back in London (Bloomsbury) in 1871 but am looking for any information after that.
Are they in your family tree?
Thanks

Lindylu

Many thanks Lindylu! This is indeed the family in question. I was very excited when I found this entry for the 1871 census during my investigations last year - up until then we had no idea if the family legends about plantations in St. Kitts were true or not but in this entry Thomas is listed as "Sugar Grower" which is quite a good clue. His wife is very much younger - I wondered if it is his second?
Alfred Turner (age 6) is my great great grandfather - and we know his story. However, I would dearly love to discover what happened to the rest of the family.
Thank again
Claire

Brilliant research - many thanks Janice.

I think the Workhouse Records for 1901 are sadly James - the family story is that they lost all their money when a Caribbean bank failed and were then destitute (after having been relatively comfortable prior to this).

I have, just this morning, found Alfred's young family in the 1901 Census ( wife Annie, Arthur 7, Mabel 8 and Alfred 12 and including my grandfather Willliam age 10) living in Shirley, Southampton - but without their Dad. Where was he, I wonder?

Thanks for your help. I have managed to print out the record for St. George Bloomsbury Workhouse for 1901.

Many thanks again
Claire

Hi again.

1881 Census research

The difference between T and J in handwriting script is very marginal - it would be amazing if this "error" in transcript is why I have not had any luck finding Alfred Adolphus Henry Turner in 1881 before now!
And also quite likely that James would have become John, too.

Thank you very much!

Claire
