Need help tracing the birth place of my ancester Jacob Turner. Information I have gained from research is that he was born 1852 and was married to Mary Ann in 1878.
Census records for 1901 and 1881 after his marriage and showing his wife and children, show his place of birth to be Manchester. Census for 1891, showing the same wife and children, has his place of birth to be Beeley, Derbyshire. Before his marriage in 1878, census records for 1871 and 1861 show two Jacob Turners - one born in Manchester to Louisa and Jacob Turner, and one born in Beeley to Sarah and John Turner.
It seems that these two individuals have somehow merged into one after his marriage, who couldn't decide where he was born!
I have only been able to obtain a birth certificate for the Jacob Turner born in Manchester, mother Louisa and father Jacob. My own family information believes Jacob to have been born at Edensor near Chatsworth, Derbyshire, which would tie up with Beeley. Any suggestions?

His marriage certificate should give you his father's name.

Did he marry in Lincolnshire? There is this marriage in 1878:-

Name: Jacob Turner
Year of Registration: 1878
Quarter of Registration: Jan-Feb-Mar
District: Horncastle
County: Lincolnshire
Volume: 7a
Page: 657

Also on the page is a Mary Ann Lansdall.

Thanks Kath, yes that's the Jacob Turner I have. Looks like I need to order a marriage certificate next!
Found it odd that some census records have his birth place Manchester and others have it as Beeley?!?

and now that you have his marriage cert saying his father is john then with the fathers and his occupations being on it maybe ,then you know that you need to follow the family with john as the father of jacob?

Elizabeth Report 19 Feb 2009 16:37

Thanks Ann - sorry I'll try again........

Have since ordered marriage certificate which shows the father to be John Turner. Not sure what to do now as the only birth certificate available does not tie up with the Jacob I'm looking for. Any suggestions?

It's unlikely that the two Jacobs have "merged". If you found both of them pre-marriage then they should both be around post-marriage (assuming neither had died in the meantime).

So 1881 and 1901 = Manchester
1891 = Beeley, Derbyshire.

Then you should be able to find the Manchester one in the 1891. He has to be there somewhere.

John Turner's occupation on the marriage cert was gamekeeper!

Elizabeth Report 9 Mar 2009 16:19

Hello again.

It appears that the Jacob I am looking for was born in Beeley (father John and mother Sarah) but no record of his birth is in existance.

I would appreciate your opinions as to why he might have recorded his birth place as Beeley in 1861, 1871 and 1891, and as Manchester in 1881, 1901 and 1911.
