DUSTY Report 3 Dec 2010 18:55

Hi,
I have been looking for some information on my nan who I thought was Elizabeth Smith for years and years but out of the blue a cousin of mine finally cracked the code her name was really Mary Ann elizabeth Turner,
her mother was not married and was given the surname of Turner and not Smith.
I have a copy of her birth Cert. She was born 19 Feb 1900 father named as Charles, Mother named as Olive Turner a Barmaid and address being 21 John Street, West Ham.
That is all I know about her and her family can anyone do some detective work and shine some more light on her life
Many thanks
Pete

I may have hit on something, I remember my mother saying that her nan Olive Turner ran away fron home when she was young with her sister, their father being a publican and he had married again after his first wife had died. the two sisters did not get on with their step mother.
I have just found on the 1881 census an Olive.O.Turner daughter of a publican at 101 Rosomand St.
but on closer inspection the O would that be O'Turner do you think?

Dusty, I've had a look at that 1881 and the O is odd.

If the name was O'Turner then I would have thought that when they copy the dittos on each line they wouldn't put an O in as well?

O'Turner isn't a name I've come across before, either.

I know very strange even the wife Mary has O. that's what made me think it maybe O' but as you said Never come across that name before??
