Find Ancestors

I'm trying to find parents of William Reader Ward (my GGGrandfather) born Emneth/Lydd St Giles c1847.

His wife's name was Jane (surname unknown) and they married c1867.

They had at least three children - Martena (Martina), Edith and Kate.

Please can anyone help me find William's parents and also if possible his wife's surname>

Also, if any of you use any subscription sites apart from this one, which ones provide the best value for money? I'd rather spend more money for more information rather than a small amount of money for very little information (does that make sense?)

Emneth is close to Wisbech. I think it's actually in Norfolk though rather than Cambridgeshire.

That second one is my GGGrandfather Margaret. His daughter Edith was my GGrandmother.

It looks as though I'll have to buy yet another birth certificate. Hubby is fine about me researching my tree (doing it for our sons, so he can't really complain!) but I'm dreading when he next checks our bank statement online. I did tell him I'd be ordering 'a few' certificates though!!!!

So this is the same family that I posted originally in 1871 with grandaughter Martina ( another one) but they're also your Martina's grandparents.

The 2 Martina/ Martenah births:
Martenah Ward, Dec. 1862, Wisbeach. (3b 567)
Martenah Ann Ward, Sep. 1868, Wisbeach. (3b 637)

Martenah is definitely a very unusual name, so even though Ward is not uncommon there must be some family name connection.

I've ordered Edith's birth certificate in order to find out her mother's maiden name. My cheque cleared a while back but I've received nothing. I phoned the register office on Friday and they will send me another copy, but this may take up to two weeks!!!!

William's entry in the marriage register shows as:

Ward William Reader Wisbeach 3B 1379

But....his wife Jane is missing on the FreeBMD site.

Is there any way of finding the rest of this register index online? It's only Jane's name which is missing from the FreeBMD site.

I've tried to search for William Reader Ward on the Ancestry site (I don't have a subscription so can only see limited information) in the hope it would bring up the spouse's name. It brought up hundreds of William Wards - some with no middle name, some with William as middle name - but no sign of William Reader Ward.

So I searched for Reader Ward, and all that brought up was the census entries giving his wife's name as Jane but obviously no surname other than Ward.

Please, can anyone point me in any other direction?

I believe she's Jane Quince, I checked the full index on Ancestry, She married Dec. Q 1867, Wisbeach. (3b 1379)

This Jane Quince matches Jane Ward in 1871.

I know I should really be patient and wait for Edith's birth certificate, but hearing that I'd probably have to wait a further two weeks (waited four already) really teed me off.
