Henry John Ward was appointed station master at Hadleigh Suffolk railway station when it opened in June 1847. At the time it was owned by the Eastern Union Railway Co.It so happened that I was Stationmaster at Hadleigh when it closed on 15th April 1965 It is only recently I have become aware that the first and last stationmasters shared the same surname . I'm trying to find out a bit more about Henry John; he's not to be found in the 1851 census and by 1861 there was a different SM . I don't known his age or birthplace. There are several Ward families in the area( I am related to one ), but it is unlikely the EUR would have appointed an inexperience local man. Has any one any knowledge of him or suggestions on where to look for info. Jeffrey Daniel Ward. |

Thanks everyone for your help, Sue C was right Henry the lodger was the man I was looking for. It was surprising to see how young he was. I've also found him in Whites Directory of Suffolk 1855 where he's listed as stationmaster in the Hadleigh section. In the next one available in the 1860s a different stationmaster is shown so I'll have to continue looking elsewhere. Regards Jeff. |
