Elvira Williams b.c.1830 is listed in 1891 census as servant to James Herbert. In 1901 census they disappear and I find an Elvira Herbert b.c.1830. What I'm trying to work out is this: Elvira was an unmarried washer woman with many children and her childrens' (all Williams) d.o.bs correspond to my Herbert family (Naomi, Evan, Mary etc - my Herberts, her Williams). It therefore seems likely that Elvira changed her family name to Herbert (can't find marriage) in her 60s just before or after James died. What would be the reason for this? Has anyone got any light to shed on this lady?
