Iam trying to find the birth place of john bassett williams born nov 1848 His father was William Williams and mother Catherine Bassett He was my greatgrandfather and all i know is he was supposedly born in Wrexham North Wales but idont think this is now true as i have a pile of birth certificates for a john williams born 1848 in Wrexham but none of them are his but i do know that it is North Wales from a cencus return living in hope Sandra

There are these two births (but not in 1848):-

His birth may not have been registered as it wasnt compulsory till 1875 when it became a fine-able offence not to ,or late, register. What you should be able to find is his parents marriage ,providing was after 1st July 1837 when registration started

I can't find a marriage for his parents or his christening on the IGI. Which census have you found him in and where where they? Can you post the details please?

A pm from Alexandrina says that John Bassett Williams moved to Scotland and married there in 1870. He is on the 1871 Scotland Census which gioves his birthplace as North Wales.

John Bassett Williams born North Wales nov 1848 moved to Scotland i dont know when married Annie Wotherspoon from Currie in Mid lothian on dec 31 1878 and had the following children

I have his marriage certificate and his death certificate he died in Newhaven north leith on sept 21 1930 i have him on 1881 cenus stating birth place north wales i can trace his wifes family back to 1697 but have never been able to find out anything about him any help would be appreciated best wishes sandra

I see that in 1891 he gives POB as England but goes back to Wales in 1901. Did he marry again as I don't think Amice in the 1901 is the Ann in 1891 - age and POB differ:

Yes he did marry again as his first wife died in 1896 not long after giving birth his second wife was called maryanne mckenzie and had another two children
donald mckenzie williams and
margaret williams but both died in infancy
