Hi I'm looking for a John Williams born abt 1831, Foddey, Kent he appears in 1871 Census, with Sarah Bone, Annie and John Bone.
I am trying to find out if there is a real connection to Sarah, Annie and John.
I have tried looking for John in later census and births and marriage's but he seems a bit of a mystery man he just seems to have disappeared

Are you saying you don't believe she's Williams daughter?

For reference:
1871 England Census
Name: Sarah Bone [Sarah Williams]
Age: 26
Estimated birth year: abt 1845
Relation: Daughter
Father's Name: John
Gender: Female
Where born: Wiltshire, England
Civil parish: Merton
Ecclesiastical parish: Winchester
Town: Merton
County/Island: Surrey
Country: England
Registration district: Croydon
Sub-registration district: Mitcham
Household Members:
Name Age
John Williams 40 - H Family; laborer
Sarah Bone 26
John Bone 3
Annie Bone 1 month

It's dfficult to read but I think the image has Sarah as married. Certainly in 1881 she has another child though is possibly a widow by then. John Williams is not born in Foddey. There is no such place as far as I can see, and that is not what it looks like on the image.

Sarah was born with the surname Bone? The image in 1871 looks like she is listed as mother (of children) rather than daughter of John

Hi Ozi, I'm not sure, I can't find any other trace of him or find a wedding in the records. Then I look at the 1881 Census as listed in there, is a John Middleton named as father, also born in 1831, at Abington Berkshire, and then when I do the mathmatics Sarah Bone born abt 1838, John Williams born 1831, (annie bone is only 1 month old in the 1871 census) I would have thought there would be more children, the only other one I have found is John.
I would think that either Sarah was married previously again no records found. Do you see what I mean am I missing something here apart from the John's

Looks like K has hit the nail on the head.

Certainly John Middleton isn't husband on image of 1881. There is no relationship for Sarah in 1881. In 1891 Middleton is a boarder, and Sarah is born Downton, Wilts as per K's find.

Relationship does look like Mother in 1871.

Hi Everybody I went back into Ancestory.com uk and had a look at the 1874 census that had John Williams on it with Sarah Bone and Annie Bone.
It definately does say in where born for John Williams Estimated birth year, 1831
where born Foddey, Kent, England
civil parish Merton
Eccelsiastical parish Winchester
Town Merton
County Surrey
If there is no Foddey that would help explain why I am having trouble finding him.
Have I read this right that Sarah was born Sarah Bone (then married a John Williams, why then have all the children the surname of Bone)
I still have not been able to locate a marriage.

Based on the census details where Sarah is always listed with the surname Bone I would doubt she married anyone. As you say the children are listed in her birth surname. Maybe a way forward to to buy one and check if a father is listed as below.

I think the 1871 birth place of John Williams listed as Foddey is faded on the census image and not well written . Sadly with such a common name it is very diificult to trace in other years of the census without a birth place
