Help needed to find Marriage and maiden name

Hi I was hoping someone could help me out please.
I have obtained the birth certificate today of My Grandfather George Albert Williams born 1896, his father is stated as Arthur Williams -General labourer and mother as Elizabeth Jane Williams formerly Male..(this caused a few laughs on the way home)
I cannot seem to find the marriage of the parents Arthur and Elizabeth nor find them on the census.I have tried searcing freeBMD but cannot find a marriage of Elizabeth Male.But knowing my history with BMD I am very likely using it incorrectly.
I think I found George ,aged 5,on the 1901 census living with his Uncle .I would appreciate any help anyone could give,
