I have three generations before Richard but it all gets very flaky. Is there some way I can be sure I have not taken a wrong turn going back? Bitton Glos.

Richard Williams of Bitton b 1784 m Anne Tucker Jun 1807
son of Robert Williams of Bitton b 1749 m Elizabeth Jeffries Mar 1775
son of Joseph Williams Bristol Glos b 1719 m Mary Williams Feb 1746
son of William Williams Bristol Glos b ca 1680 m Ann Gammig ! Jun 1702

I have found alternative wife names and have made educated assumptions but this is most unsatisfactory. My resources have been LDS and Genes Reu but not sure if there is somewhere more positive for this line.

Lynne, ( and A of GG )

It is possible but not certain that the Richard Williams in 1851 census:
Name Richard Williams
Age 77
Estimated Year of Birth 1784
Relationship to Head of Household Head
Occupation Independent
Address Almondbury
District Thornbury, Almondsbury
Parish Almondsbury
Administrative County Gloucestershire
Birth Place Almondbury
Birth County Gloucestershire
is my Richard and is as shown above in Anne of Green Gables first post although I cannot find either him or his wife Ann in a census together with their child Robert b 30 Jan 1810 who is my certain link via census back to Richard. Of concern is that 1851 census shows his wife is then Elizabeth aged 74 not Ann. (Alarm bells or remarriage?)

Of course by 1841 Robert would have been 31 and flown the nest except they often lived in each others pockets for decades. BTW Almondsbury is only 5 miles from Bitton and the increase in coal mining in Bitton then would have drawn in labour from miles around. The Williams and my father were involved in coal up to WWII .

It looks like I am at the position where I can only make assumptions about the pre Richard Williams clan which takes me back to William Williams m Jun 1702. Shame I can't be more certain.

Thank you all, perhaps some other evidence will turn up one day.
