William Williams - b. Kettering, Northants C1878

I have hit a hurdle - not sure if anyone can help

According to family stories my Great Grandfather emigrated to Australia - possibly something to do with singer sewing machines. I dont know when he went - he was on the 1911 census in Fulham.

My Grandfather (John Williams b.1909) and his sister Dorothy (b.1906) stayed in the UK with their mother Dorothy Brinkworth (b. 1883) and in 1918 she had a the first of several further children with another father - we know that she never married the second man. So this should narrow down his emigration to between 1911 (after the census) and 1918 (when the further child was born).

I guess therefore that my Great Grandfather was still alive in Australia and they never divorced. I would love to find out what happened to him - where he went in Australia and if he had more family.

I have tried to look at passenger lists etc but the name William Williams is not an easy one to find - also I dont know the exact year or the departure or arrival points.

Any help with where to next would be gratefully received!

Thanks

Karen

if you can tell us his parents' names it might help

death certificates in Australia show parents' names (if the person reporting the death knew them) and the death records for some states can be searched on line using parents' given names

this would be him in 1901? EDIT !! that should be __1891__ !!

Name: William Williams
Age: 13
Estimated birth year: abt 1878
Relation: Son
Father's name: John Williams <<<
Mother's name: Elizabeth Williams <<<
Gender: Male
Where born: Kettering, Yorkshire, England

Civil Parish: Fulham <<<

John Williams 42
Elizabeth Williams 49
John Williams 19
William Williams 13
Emily H Williams 8
Louisa C Williams 12
Sarah Jone Phillips 28

the 1881 census posted earlier ... details are

Elizabeth Williams 42
Sarah E. Williams 13
John Williams 7
Elizabeth C. Williams 5
William Williams 3
Joseph Williams 20

so that appears to be a red herring

there were several William Williams s born in Kettering around that time in the censuses

Thanks everyone for your help on this.
Williams parents were John (b. 1849 - chipping norton, ox) and Elizabeth (b. 1849 - dudley , w. mid) - not sure of her maiden name.

William's siblings were sarah b.1868 (Dudley), John b. 1874 (Truro), Elizabeth b.1876 (Kettering) and Emily b. 1883 (Ashton U Lyne)

The father was a toll keeper so they moved around a lot.

Any help tracing the Australian part would be great.

Thanks again

Karen

so that looks like the correct family now. that information would have been useful yesterday when I searched first time round.

It doesn't really help but I wonder if he could possibly be this one?

Occupation is Engineer, which 'could' perhaps fit? - It doesn't mention Sewing Machines but
we would tend to call repairers of any type of machine an 'engineer' nowadays ??

Perhaps someone with access to the incoming records at the Australia end can find some more details on him for you?

Thanks for that - I'll check into it - I have looked at a couple of possibilities - not sure if I had seen this one.

It's family say so around the Australia connection - im wondering if that is the red herring!

Thanks to everyone for their help

hmm i wondered about that one too.

engineer has wide possibilities.

Dea

Dea Report 12 Feb 2011 13:19

Well, it is at least worth someone taking a look at the incoming in Australia, if only to discount it?

Couldn't find anything else to fit.

https://online.justice.vic.gov.au/bdm/index-search?action=getHistIdxSearchCriteria

the Victoria index shows two deaths for

William Williams
father John
mother Elizabeth

the records are very cheap to view ... you can see both of those for $1 AUS ... but you need to buy credits

it can be searched by mother's maiden name but you don't knwo Elizabeth's ... you will eventually want a child's birth certificate to get that name if you plan to search farther back I would imagine
