I'm trying to find my great grandfather John Frederick Wood born around 1896. He married Edith Holt Nov 8th 1919 in Stockport, he was listed as a Manufacturers clerk (later a branch manager of a clothing company) and his father was listed as Frederick Wood a commercial traveller.

John lived at 107 Adswood Lane West at time of marriage.

When my grandmother Sybil Wood was born in 1923 they lived at 5 Wild St.

John and Edith also had John, Yvonne, Iris.

Obviously with such a popular name like John Wood there are so many I havent managed to find his birth cert, or where he was born.

Any help anyone can give me would be really appreciated.

This is what I originally came up with, however my Aunt Linda (Sybil's daughter) says she doesnt recall anybody mentioning living in this area, nor that she ever visited any family in this area.

Is there anyway of finding out whether they moved from here to Stockport (therefore being in Stockport at time of marriage in 1919?)

I only have my grandmother's Sybil Wood's birth cert and her parents, John F Wood and Edith Holts marriage cert... not sure how I can find out for sure?

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

You could try to find this family in the 1911 census to see where they were living - it's pay per view I'm afraid and quite expensive.

Hi thanks for your help.

Yes I think looking at the 1911 census is the only way i'm going to break this brick wall now, could you advise how I would go about that?

Thanks again I appreciate it

Thanks I will let you know how I get on.

I had found a John F Wood living in Stockport in 1901 (Born in Sheffield) with mother Elizabeth and brother Herbert... no father. Do you think it would be worthwhile checking that out on the 1911 too?

Looking at the 1901 census again, i've found a John F Wood living in Stockport at the same street (Adswood Lane West) he was living at when he got married in 1919, only it was no 107 in 1919 not no 20 as in the 1901.

The only problem is there isnt a Frederick living there, only the mother Elizabeth and another son. No father living at the address. Could this be that he just wasnt there at time? The dob is right for John F Wood and it seems a coincidence that its the same street.

Is there another way of checking this is the correct john f Wood? Maybe check the 1911 for these two addresses?

Any suggestions/help would be appreciated

UPDATE:

Thanks for the advise i've paid to use the 1911 census and have found that John Frederick Wood was living at 107 Adswood Lane West in 1911(same address as stated on his marriage cert in 1919)listed as:

Elizabeth Wood, Widow, age 43, mother, former hat trimer, born Furness Vale, Derbyshire

Herbert Wood age 17, clerk in signal box, born Sheffield - Son

John Frederick Wood, 14, Hat Worker, born Sheffield

I think this is the correct family as the addresses are correct, and bec Elizabeth is listed as a widow, this would explain why Frederick the father (as listed on the marriage cert) wasnt there!

It also explains why I couldnt find a birth cert for John F Wood in Stockport, bec they were born in Sheffield. So at least i'm closer to finding them.

At least that is one brick wall out of the way!

Hi

I've managed to find John F & Herbert Wood's ref for birth cert born in Sheffield, have sent off for them to see if I can find more information.

Now my problem is finding out who Elizabeth was, I cant find a marriage for Elizabeth and Frederick Wood.... and although she was listed as widow in 1911 and Frederick wasnt there in 1901 or 1981... I still cant find a death cert which fits.

Any help or suggestion would be appreciated... i'll keep you posted about the birth certs
