Find Ancestors

This gentleman was my great grandfather. He left my great grandmother once their family were grown. Can anybody tell me what happened to him? I can find no trace. My father, who is now 88, would love to know where his grandfather went.

He was very musical, if that is any help, and my great grandmother's name was Jacobina McDonald.

Do you have his mother's maiden name?

Hi, thanks for help so far. His mother and father were John Wood and Isabella Ross.

My great uncle Ernest was never spoken about in the family because...He married a barmaid!

How times change.

And his actual date of birth was April 14th 1863 so yesterday he would have been 146.

Just to say I am still looking for my great grandfather. If anyone has a William Wood in their tree who has appeared out of nowhere that might be him!

Any new suggestions welcome.

Have you put his name into the Search Trees facility above?


that's likely to give you more results than expecting someone to be wandering by this board and happening to see your posting.


Those of us who do look on here are the ones who help find information by using our subscriptions in other sites ............... as you see people have found documentary evidence, but we can't find what you are really asking.


You may need to think of looking at electoral rolls, searching for deaths, remarriages


but William Wood is not an uncommon name.


I suggest that you try the trees on here ........ and also maybe go over to ancestry.co.uk, if you have a subscription on there, and see if anyone over there has him

Hi Everyone, thank you for all the help and suggestions.

I have been over all those named William Wood given on Scotland's People that died in Scotland during the time since he disappeared where the age given was close to what his would have been.

Searching the English records is more complicated and a lot more expensive but I have had a look for anyone that was obviously him.

When the 1911 census comes out it will be helpful as it will let me know whether he was still living with the family at that time or whether he had left by then.

I have a pay as you go subscription with Ancestry.co.uk, and have subscribed to the forums at Rootschat as well. I have looked on there and done searches in their forums as well.

I have managed to find most of my direct ancestors going back seven generations but not this one!

I've looked at the tree matches here. I've also searched to see if he divorced my great grandmother as that might have given a clue to his whereabouts then, but there is no record of any divorce, and on her death certificate in 1944 she is given as married.

I know this board is only seen by people "passing through" so to speak, but I just keep bumping it on the offchance that someone sees it and goes "oh yes I know him".

It is certainly not my main area of search as I am trying everything else I can think of, and I am very grateful for all suggestions here.

Well I've now sent off 29 messages to tree matches where the year of birth is one either side and the location is either blank, unknown, Scotland, or a location close to where I know he was born.

Let's see if that helps.
