Hi there all you lovely genealogists!
I am trying to trace the birth of my grandfather Clarence Augustus Wood born 1873 a british citizen in Brooklyn New York. Since I posted a request a few weeks ago I have found out more about his life in the UK but its a mystery as to why he was born in the US and Id really like to trace his birth certificate. His army records state his mother as nok her name Isabell (not sure if spelling is correct) Wood. If any US genealogists out there can help Id be really grateful - Ive tried all the usual searches from this end to no avail.
Many thanks
Debbie

Just to get him in context, is this the first appearance in UK?

1901 England Census

Name: Clarina A Wood
Age: 28
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1873
Relation: Head
Spouse's Name: Rosena M
Gender: Male
Where born: New York, United States

Civil parish: Harwick St Nicholas
Ecclesiastical parish: Harwick St Nicholas
County/Island: Essex

Registration district: Tendring
Sub-registration district: Harwick
ED, institution, or vessel: 7
Neighbors: View others on page
Household schedule number: 264
Household Members:
Name Age
Clarina A Wood 28
Rosena M Wood 26
William A Wood 1

I wonder where he married Rosena? She was born in UK. Thinking it might help to have father's name? Possibly he was also in the military I suppose, hence the birthplace. Not seeing a marriage yet though!

There is a marriage for a Clarence Augustus Wood listed in

GRO Index Army Marriages
(1881 to 1955) 1896 - 1900

Wood, Clarence Augustus Gibralter 1897 Page 10

Record doesn't name spouse.

Hi,

Pam found the marriage in Gibraltar but I don't know of a site which shows spouses.

But, - 1911 shows her name to be Rosina Mary.

I looked up the Rosina Mary's born in Bermondsey at that time and looked through the names for a listing for each one in Gibraltar.

I came up with this one - Rosina Mary Acker - same reference number.

This would be her birth:

Births Sep 1874 - District includes Bermondsey!
Acker Rosina Mary St. Olave 1d 231

I wonder if she sent for his marriage to Rosina to get Clarences fathers name and occupation?

Pam

Pam Report 29 Sep 2009 15:41

....and Dea spent all that time this morning cross checking to find Rosina's maiden name.

PLEASE just one thread per subject.......it is such a waste of time to keep finding information you already have.

Hello everyone
Firstly my sincere apologies for starting another thread - my only excuse is that I am very new to this site and would hate to think that people had wasted their time simply because I had made an error so please accept my heartfelt apologies.
Secondly thank you all so very much for the help - I am working tonight but will look through all your replies tomorrow and reply on this thread.
Many thanks again.
