my 3xgrandfather james wood (B) about 1801 linthwaite almonbury, yorkshire, married ann haigh (B) about 1805 marsden ,almondbury (M) 1826 21 aug at almondbury and moved to stalybridge their first born James 1839a butcher living at mount pleasant stalybridge...my question is knowing wood is a common name, how can i find his parents also cannot find his death, have tried many avenues without success, any help would be greatly appreciated

I have james on 1851 census in aged 50, in 1861 ann is living with Joe(son) and martha(daughter) no sign of James and it looks as if ann is still a butcher...

So it would seem your best bet are the Almondbury parish registers - a place search in the library catalog at the LDS site gets:

My James married Ann Haigh 21 Aug 1826 their sons James (b. 31/12/1838 - Joe (b.17/12/1840 there were other siblings don't have certs for them yet....
