Trying to find a branch of a Wood family who lived in the 1880's around Mile End Old Town - 82 Shandy Street in 1882. (House in Cemetery Gardens) Father was John Wood married to Catherine Wood (nee Hancock) - they had 8 children. John the father died of heart disease in 1888 and Catherine died of smallpox in 1884. He worked for Charrington's Brewery. On Catherine's death John remarried Lydia Fenner - nee Hancock (Catherine's sister.) On John's death Lydia reverted to her first marriage name - Fenner. The elder Wood children were kept together when their parents died as a family unit by Walter and Catherine (twins) born in 1868. Next came Sarah 1879,Frank 1874,Ralph 1875,John 1879, Gertrude Eliza 1880 and Alfred Edmund 1882. Gertrude and Alfred spent their late childhood/early teens at Muller's Orphanage,Bristol. Alfred was my Grandfather and I have the records from the Muller Orphanage to be 100% correct on these facts - plus death certs. and letters from Walter etc. etc. Signatures on the Orphanage records show that a Bowman, Gilham and Peek family were also closely related to the Wood family. Know the siblings kept in touch when they became independent -have letters and post cards.... Have not been able to track down Catherine,Sarah and Gertrude as I do not know their married names....but heard them talked about as Aunty Kate,Aunty Gert.......by Dad (b.1922) According to the 1901 Census - Walter married Annie and had a son Walter S W born 1895 - Walthamstow, Frank married Mary and had two children Albert 1901and Mabel 1900 - Gillingham,Kent. Ralph married Alice and had one son Frederick 1901 - East Ham. Plus one of the sons had a daughter named Maud (b.1906 circa) Have masses of info. to share. Di. Stringer

Hi,
this is a real long shot but have been looking for a Alf Wood, born 1881 died 1961 who married a Maggie Bowern/Bower/Wilson from Ireland. He was apparently from London, a cockney. was a tiny man who fought WW1 and was a boxer according to mum. they had 4 children one of which was my grandmother Amy. As you see a long shot but maybe??
