Trying to find Wood

I'm utterly stumped by my maternal great-great-grandfather. I know that his name is JOHN WOOD. His son, GEORGE WOOD, was my great-grandfather, but I can't track down the reference relating to George's birth, which I know (from censuses and marriage certificate) was in 1856. I've found him on the 1871 England census, which is the earliest census to which I have access, but by that time he was 15 and living away from home, working as an Ag Lab, so that doesn't help me finding out about his wider family. I've tried Ancestry, I've tried BMDIndex, FreeBMD and the LDS sites. I've tried varying the date range, widening the search area, but I simply can't find any reference anywhere to his birth! As you can see, he can't seem to have made up his mind about where he was born - (all Shropshire SAL) Places of birth given for George - 1871 - Ruyton 1881 - Shrewsbury 1891 - Stottesden 1901 - Stablesdon Any ideas for where I look next would be much appreciated... |
