We think one of our relatives, John Wright, may have died in the Boer War. Is there any way of finding records of soldiers who died during this conflict? Any good websites?

If he did die out there, would his death be registered back in the UK or held somewhere else?

Thanks in anticipation.

It's not terribly simple there is a detailed explanation on what to do on the links below. It will really help if you know which regiment / have any of his medals etc .
Even if you don't have any of his medals hopefully you'll find him on the medal roll.

most info is held at the National Archive Kew London

Ok - thanks for all that. I will detail below what I know about him.

His name was Francis John Wright (but I believe he was known as John). He was born in a workhouse in Spilsby Lincs, in Q1, 1870 (7a 565) and the 1871 census lists him as being one year old. He was born Francis John Orrey as his mother Sarah was unmarried when he was born. She later married Edward Wright in 1873, and the little one took his name.

Sarah's daughter Ada (Francis John's half sister) was my great grandmother and her son was my estranged granddad. I never knew him but have just made contact with his sister's family, who belive that Francis John joined the Army and was killed during the Boer War, but they have no evidence for that, so I guess its just family stories that feed that.

At the moment, this information is fresh to me so I have not been able to do any other research. Sadly Victoria, I dont know what regiment he was in or about medals. I dont think he was married so if he had medals, I wouldnt know what became of them - at least not yet.

I hope this is useful, and thanks for your help, its much appreciated.
