The source info on a census identifies a particular sheet. You can look up the sheet using this info on Ancestry (with advanced search options).

The first item identifies the census 1861-1911 by rg9-rg14. For 1841-51, ho107 was used, and the low piece #s got used in 1841, then another set of piece #s got assigned for 1851.

An Enumeration District was a census tract that was handled by one enumerator. He'ld go out before hand a drop off census forms for the census, nominally at midnight on Sunday, then go round Monday and pick up the completed forms, and maybe help fill out forms that folk had problems with, and maybe go out again on Tuesday for those folk who didn't hang around the house all day waiting for their census form to be collected. He'ld go back to the office, and copy all the stuff into his enumerators book. Thru 1901, the original forms were destroyed.

A bunch of EDs were combined into a "piece". This is the 2nd # in the source ID. From 1861 on, as one might infer from the rg code, the registrar general was responsible for the census, and each registration district was split into (typically abt 3) pieces.

You can look these piece #s up at:
http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/Default.asp?j=1
Just type say ho107/1753 into the box at top left.
This # (i.e., ho107/1753) will appear on the PRO's copyright strip just off margin in the image of the sheet proper.

The last # is the page # in the enumerators book. Now as we've seen, there will be a number of page 8's in ho107/1753 (at least 40). So to distinguish them, just before filming, them a folio # number was stamped onto the top right of every odd page using an increasing stamper. Thus, the folio # uniquely identifies a pair of pages within the piece, and the page # sorts out which of the pair.
This was changed in 1911, when the ED was incorporated into the piece #:

RG 14/8908 Registration Sub-District: Stofford Civil Parish, Township or Place: Clifton (part) RD 175 RS 2 ED 5
RG 14/8909 Registration Sub-District: Stofford Civil Parish, Township or Place: Clifton (part) RD 175 RS 2 ED 6

Unlike Scotland (where the piece # mostly stayed with the parish/piece), each census had a difft set of piece #s.

I'm lost, still don't know what handout is looking for! "Any information" doesn't tell us anything!

Short answers to a couple of the questions

-- the source info for censuses is of no concern to you, ignore it.

-- source info from the IGI can be useful -- you can click on a "Batch No." and search inside that batch for births with the same surname and same parents in the same place.

I find it helpful to delete the bumph when I copy census and IGI records so people can see it clearly, for instance from the above

Source Information:
Batch No.: Dates: Source Call No.: Type: Printout Call No.: Type:
M022193 1754 - 1783 1279076 Film 6903072 Film
M022193 1813 - 1885 1279076 Film NONE

what you really want is:

Batch No. M022193

which you can't tell from reading that!

Now, handout, you said this:

"my granddad was born canal terrace 4 3 1911 he was called certificate he called alfred john charles,i dont if there was any sibblings i have the marrige certificate of my gr granddad william but on the marriage certificate was called percy."

I can't make head nor tail of this.

Your granddad Alfred John Charles, okay.

Your gr-grandad - William or Percy? You didn't say, but this is surname Wright?

Where does the name William for your gr-grandad come from, and how do you know the Percy marriage is him?

This is your granddad's birth?

Births Jun 1911

(maybe Alfred Charles John Wright )

and that looks like the right 1911 census ---Canal Terrace was where they were still living on the 1911census --and you say on his birth certificate it says he was born Canal Terrace.

It looks like his parents called him Johnny on the census.

Oops, same danged census Barbara already gave, so I'll edit it out and just leave the link for handout, for doing searches

and Barbara's given the birth I already gave. ;)
