I am trying to locate my great grandfather Henry Wright from London, he married Ellen Culley in 1913 in Hackney. After this date I can not find any trace of Henry.

You need to give a whole lot more information. ;)

What was his age when he married Ellen Culley? When and where did they have children? Certainly if he's your gr-grfather you do know something more about him -- your grandparent's birth! You can find any other children they had by searching at FreeBMD for Wright births with Culley mother.

How old was he when he married / do you have his birth record? Middle name? Info like that is crucial for finding a death record, e.g.

Anything and everything you know!

So ... both had middle initial J

Marriages Dec 1913
Culley Ellen J Wright Hackney 1b 919
Wright Henry J Culley Hackney 1b 919

and children were

Births Mar 1915
Wright Edward H G Culley Hackney 1b 690
Births Jun 1920
Wright Dorothy E E Culley Hackney 1b 950
Births Sep 1921
Wright Ronald B Culley Hackney 1b 675

And possibly two others in Sevenoaks after that?

Oh - but!

Marriages Sep 1914
Culley Emily Wright Hackney 1b 1115
WRIGHT Edward C Culley Hackney 1b 1115

Related?? You'll have to identify what births belong to your Wright-Culley couple.

In 1911 -- Ellen was not a youngster? (So neither was Henry?)

CULLEY ELLEN JANE 1866 45 Hackney London
living with
CULLEY MARY 1890 21
CULLEY EMILY 1893 18
CULLEY GEORGE 1895 16
CULLEY ROSE 1899 12

?

You need at least the Wright+Cullen marriage certificate to get an age for Henry.

You do know what became of Ellen after the marriage -- ?

Would this be her death? --

Name: Ellen J Wright
Death Registration Month/Year: 1946
Age at death (estimated): 80 = dob c1866
Registration district: Hackney
Inferred County: London
Volume: 1b
Page: 459

This death would seem to fit for Henry, if that is the right Ellen:

Name: Henry J Wright
Death Registration Month/Year: 1919
Age at death (estimated): 60 = dob c1859
Registration district: Hackney
Inferred County: London
Volume: 1b
Page: 829

So we should assume that Ellen was not your GGM, and your grandparent was a child of Henry's from before that marriage?

The reason for my confusion is as follows;

Ellen Jane Newcombe (Great grandma) married William George Culley (Great granddad he died 1899) 6 Kids Emily, Rose and..................Can't find their marriage

Ellen Jane Culley (Great grandma) then married Henry J Wright (Great granddad, can’t trace him or his first wife who is also my great grand mother)
1913 in Hackney, Vol 1b Page 919)

Edward Charles Wright (grandfather) married Emily Culley (grandmother)
1914 in Hackney (Vol 1b Page 1115)

So to simplify; Ellen Jane Culley & Emily Culley (mother & daughter) Married Henry J & Edward C Wright (father & son)

Therefore this confusing foursome, Ellen Jane, nee Newcombe nee Culley nee Wright and William Culley & Henry J Wright and first wife are legally and blood related to me making all four of them my Great Grandparents.

Confused, I am

Okay ... !

Your grandparents were

Edward Charles Wright
son of Henry J Wright and Ms?

Emily Culley
daughter of Ellen Jane Newcombe and William George Culley

Ellen Jane Newcombe married Henry J Wright

Am I following so far? ;)

So Henry J Wright and Ms? are your GGPs through Edward.
And Ellen Jane Newcombe and William George Culley are your GGPs though Emily.

And it is here where I am always tempted to say: But who owned the giraffe? ;)

But - the question is, who was Henry J Wright's first wife, mother of Edward. How'm I doing?

Just a note: "Ellen Jane, nee Newcombe nee Culley nee Wright".

"Née" means "born". So she was "Ellen Jane formerly (née) Newcombe late Culley" when she married Wright.

Missing info here is the birth year of Edward Charles Wright (as calculated from age at marriage in 1914, if necessary).

Actually, I guess, the ages of everybody at all their marriages, and Henry J's full middle name.

Is this them in 1891?

Name: Edward Chas Wright
Age: 2
Estimated birth year: abt 1889
Relation: Son
Father's Name: Henry
Mother's Name: Mary Ann
Where born: Hackney, London, England

Civil parish: Hackney

Henry Wright 43
Mary Ann Wright 39
Marry Wright 19
Florence Emma Wright 7
Frank Geo Wright 4
Edward Chas Wright 2
Rosa Ada Wright 6/12

Or perhaps more likely in 1901:

Name: Edward C Wright
Age: 10
Estimated birth year: abt 1891
Relation: Son
Father's Name: Henry J
Mother's Name: Emily
Gender: Male
Where born: London, Middlesex, England

Civil parish: Chingford

Henry J Wright 36
Emily Wright 39
Edward C Wright 10
Edward C Stowe 29 - boarder

Yes, that appears to be right. Thank you, also for correcting the nees.

I happen to recall an Annie connected to the family and somewhere there is a picture of her sitting in a yard with a canary in a cage. She does however look quite elderly. Oh goodness sounds like I may be losing the plot.
