My 2xgt grandfather was William George Parkin Young, born in Bitton, Gloucestershire on 31st October 1839. I have his birth certificate, which shows that his father was William Young, a hay and straw dealer and his mother was Mary Hopes - both I believe born in Bitton. There are several Mary Hopes and not a few William Youngs born around the right time to be candidates for parents, but I cannot find their marriage. I do have a marriage certificate for a William Young and Mary Hopes for 1837 at Dundry but I am not sure that it is them because Dundry is a long way west of Bitton.

I have found a William and Mary Young with a son called William aged 2 on the 1841 Census - at Bitton. But I can't find them on any subsequent census returns. There is a William aged 12 on the 1851 Census living with his grandfather Thomas Young at Oldland, but no sign of his parents. I know they may have emigrated, but why would they have not taken their (only) son? I also can't find any reference to their possible deaths in the years from 1841 to 51.

Is there anyone else who has these people in their family tree or can suggest what else might have happened to them please.

Sue
