Trying to find John (Joseph?) Young

ProfilePosted byOptionsPost Date

According to the 1901 census my great great grandad was John Young, he was 53 at the time so should have been born in 1848, and according to that same census page he was born in Long Compton, Warwickshire. He may have been called Joseph (his son was named Joseph too but John is a name carried on through that line of the family). He was married to Fanny, but I have no idea what her maiden name was, or when they were married.

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Stephanie. Thank you for that - where did you get that info from as it puts John's age at 45 whereas the census states he is 53?! Also, yours has Mary Cockrill with an R but the census has it as Cockill. I'm almost certain I've found the BMD record - John married Fanny Louisa Cockbill (notice the 'b') in 1889 in Chipping Norton. This would put it four years earlier than the birth of their son Joseph.

Still Looking - I'm guessing that she was born as Cockbill as she is listed as such on the 1901 census, but I am guessing. Now I have her correct surname it may be easier.

UPDATE: My Grandad (John's Grandson) wrote a book about his Dad (John's son). Unfortunately my Grandad is dead so I can't ask him to verify anything, nor may he have been able to as he did not really know his Grandad. In any case, in the book, he mentions that John died four years after Fanny. I have verified Fanny's death as June 1903, so 1907 seemed a good place to start looking. There is a John Young that died in Chipping Norton in June 1907, aged 62. That would put his birth year in 1845. There was a John Young born in December 1844 in Chipping Norton. Could this be him? I realise that there is a year difference there but that could have been as it was December or error in transcription or something. It could also have been that he was 58 in the 1901 census but it has been wrongly recorded as 53. So many uncertanties! Anyone have any ideas about verifying it? There was another John Young born in Chipping Norton in March 1854 which would put his age at the 1901 census at 47 which is nearer the 45 from Stephanie's post but I'm leaning towards the former.

Thank you for your continued help - I am really hoping I can trace a little further back now.

I have also found another John Young in Chipping Norton that died aged 81 in March 1903. Could this be John's Dad?! Census lookups again for me next!

I have discovered some new information about this one, but now am looking for more as a result!

Warwickshire Records office have confirmed that they have a baptism record for John Young in December 1844. This is definitely him. John's Dad was Joseph Young and he was married to Hannah, he was born about 1810 in Long Compton. I have found the following IGI record:

Joseph Young
Male

Event(s):
Birth:
1810
Long Compton, Warwick, England
Christening:
Death:
Burial:

Marriages:
Spouse:
Hannah
Marriage:
About 1830
Chasteton, , Oxford, England

(This should read CHASTLETON, not Chasteton, Chastleton is also in the Cotswolds but is Oxfordshire rather than Warwickshire)

The thing is, I have no idea where this info would have come from - does anyone have any way of telling me if there is a record of their marriage available?

Thanks,

Steve
