ProfilePosted byOptionsPost Date

Jean Report 4 Apr 2008 18:17

I am trying to find an ancestor who in 1851 was described as a Pauper. I don't know if she was still married at ths time but how do I find out where she was. Or what had happened to her. She was from the Portsmouth area.

IGI St John Portsea 1820-1875, C063151:

Bapt 20 Dec 1838, Emma, d of Margaret and Roger Fogwell

Ivy

Ivy Report 9 Jun 2008 18:11

Earliest bapt in those registers with father Roger is 1829; however, IGI does not have a marriage for Roger in the 1820s in Hampshire. Perhaps he was on his second marriage? Or second partner but not married?

But there is a marriage in Hampshire in 1819:

Roger Fogwell to Margaret Lee 25 Dec 1819 in Alverstoke (marr register IGI ref M073577)

[Edit - Alverstoke and Portsea are either side of a narrow sea channel at the mouth of the Portsmouth harbour access to the English Channel.]

In light of the comments regarding the variable age on the census and the age of having her children, it would be sensible to bear in mind that there may two different women named Margaret in this case.

Margaret in 1841 "aged 30" (so born between 1807 and 1811, if age known exactly and then rounded down to the nearest 5 years as requested) would not have married in 1819.

It might be worth trying to find out whether Thomas Hann could be a relation to Margaret's parents?

[Edit - an interesting submitted record on the IGI has Roger Fogwell b abt 1833 in Portsmouth, m Nancy Hann in 1854, and died 1904]
