Hello all

Mary Cope was born on the 23rd of December 1837 in Tattenhall Cheshire.

She was Illegitimate and took her mothers name.

Her mother was Anne Cope, and on the birth cert it states that the informant was Thomas James Proudlove, Surgeon of Tattenhall who was also the Registrar.

Can anybody find Mary Cope on the 1841 and 51 census as i cant seem to.

Danny

There is this marriage in 1839 in Great Boughton registration district which covers Tattenhall:-

Name: Mary Cope
Year of Registration: 1839
Quarter of Registration: Oct-Nov-Dec
District: Great Boughton
County: Cheshire, Flintshire
Volume: 19
Page: 85

SORRY - got mixed up with this. It would be a marriage for Anne and not Mary that would be needed.

I would think that could be a rellie but my Mary was born in 1837.

Could this be a marriage for Anne Cope:-

Name: Anne Cope
Year of Registration: 1837
Quarter of Registration: Jul-Aug-Sep
District: Great Boughton
County: Cheshire, Flintshire
Volume: 19
Page: 35

I realise that this would be before the birth of Mary but perhaps whoever Anne married was not the father and so didn't want the child to have his name.

Just a thought really.

Hi Danny :-)

To add to the mix is the following.

The following is what I found looking at other ‘Ancestry’ sites & forums – the information may prove to be spot on I cannot truly say and have no idea of its true authenticity - I am writing this hoping it may be of help. So -> I ‘STRONGLY’ suggest you follow up this information 'before' taking it as 'fact' with your own further research.

Firstly I have been unable to locate your Mary Cope within the 1841 & 1851 census takings.

It looks like Mary’s mother Ann Cope married to a Thomas Brooks [on IGI Familysearch it has there marriage was in 1831 – I think this may be a mistake – more than likely to be about1837]. Further looking at IGI daughter to Thomas Brooks & Ann Cope is Mary Brooks b:23rd December 1838 [Birth date correct – Year slightly out - so cannot be discounted] – It is a possibility that for appearance sake Mary Cope may have also gone by the surname of Brooks...to cover for her illegitimacy after her mother Ann married. I have been unable to place her with Brooks as surname.

Hope the above pans out to be correct :-)

Cheers ~ Steve.

Note: Danny if you have access to 'Ancestry.com' I highly recommend you look at the 'Public Tree' section and cross reference Mary Cope b:1837 Cheshire.

Update ->

This looks more than likely going along with my thoughts in regards to Mary as Brooks as Surname instead of Cope -> 1841 Census details.
