Hi Derek,
I am searching for confirmation of a birth/baptism of Ellen Nightingale c1806 in the Duffield area, may be Belper. Parents William Nightingale and either Elisabeth or Mary.

I thought it was Elizabeth but future siblings seem to have mother Mary.

I have not found a death for Elisabeth.

I have also not found a marriage for William and Elisabeth or William and Mary.

I think Ellen is the eldest. child.

I am having great difficulty unravelling this part of my family so any help would be appreciated thank you.

Thanks Derek Ellen was definitely in Belper as a child as she attended strutts school. Maybe she wasn't born there even though the censuses say she was.

Hi Ann.....if born in Belper she would have been registered in Duffield..cos belper is not in itself a Parish.......I'll collate all the Nightingales I can find..some of them are Nightingalls!...and when i have I'll send them to you......might take some time!!

Hello Ann..you say you have David's military details....did he serve in Ireland????
There is only one entry for him on the census...which to me means he was out of the country till after the 1851 census and maybe died before the 1971 census.see what you think:
DAVID STONE born 1808 Chester..married CATHERINE (from Jersey)
In 1861.aged 52/3 hw is a Colliery labourer at Belper.......he has FOUR sons.. which were born in Ireland (but registered British Subjects.which usually infers British father in the armed forces)
Peter 1846/ David 1848 (both Coal miners.at such a tender age!!)..George 1852 and William 1854....
Does this fit with anything you have?? If not i'll keep looking

Hello Derek,
Yes that is him.I was confused because his army record says he was born in Belper, 1861 census says Teachester Cheshire & 1871 census says Leicester.
I think he died in 1879 age 72 Sheffield.
I cannot find his marriage to Catherine Fitzpatrick.
Thank you for looking.
Regards Ann.

Hi Derek... Re Frederick Thomas Strong Furniss

I sent for the 1840 marriage cert. Frederick Furniss to Mary Barnes in Prestwich Lancs, using John Furniss {father} as reference check.

It has arrived today, the father is what looks like Nimrod Furniss a moulderer, same proffesion as his son, so definetly not my frederick Thomas strong Furniss, who was a plumber, so am still no further forward.

Why don`t the GRO take any notice of the reference check? I will have to phone them on Monday about getting my money back, the print out of the application form that arrived with it clearly states the ref. check.

Unfortunately John Furniss is not an uncomon name..there are loads in Derbys......How did he get from Derbyshire to Prestwich?

Derek Report 18 Oct 2008 22:12

Hi Ann..I have the Duffield Weddings up to 1812..No mention of a William......still looking ..don't panic yet x

Nickydownsouth Report 18 Oct 2008 22:33

John furniss bc1797 was my gr gr grandfather, on his son Charles marriage cert. in 1848 he is a Commercial Traveller, {presumably how they got from Derbyshire to Lancashire} they are on the census in 1841 in West derby Lancashire, after that I have no definite findings of John or Elizabeth. I`m hoping that Frederick Thomas Strong Furniss is john and Elizabeths eldest child, and Charles elder brother which is why I`m trying to track down fredericks marriage cert. to hopefully find John Furniss as father.

Hi Derek what a wonderful offer

I have a brickwall for you if possible.

I have a Richard Turner, I think about 1777 married to Phoebe there is a marriage in 1792 in Staveley of Richard (Ridgeway) to Phoebe Garfit (Staveley)
All the children were born in Ridgeway (apart from the 1st 2 they are confirmed on the Ridgeway Parish Records. ) I believe that my Richard came from Ridgeway but I can't find a birth for him anywhere, nor can I find Phoebe.

Can you help ?

Thanks
Uzzi
