Hi all,

Yesterday I learned that my great great grandfather probably came from Athens (a surprise to me, because I thought Venice).

The source of the information was the 1891 census which tells me that:

His name was Nicols Barcello (also recorded as Nicholas on his mariage registry). He was 40 in 1891 and was described as a Mariner born in athens.

I have ordered the marriage certificate from GRO, which I hope will provide more information.

I would be grateful for any advice as to how I might be able to trace this back to Athens. Does anyone have any ideas?

I was wondering if you or any one else have got the birth or baptism information from Greece for Nicols Barcello. I have been looking into how to access it from New Zealand but it all seems very trival. I would love to research this line further back

If you look under "search" at the top right of the screen and then click on "search all member trees" and put Nichols Barcello into the search box you will see there is someone called Kimberley who has this person in their tree. You can click on "Find out more" and send a message direct to Kimberley.

There is no way of knowing if she is still a member but if she still has the same email address that she registered with Genes she should get a message from Genes letting her know that she has a message from you..

thank you everyone for the update. I have gone online and downloaded a whole heap of very exciting information. I have also done as suggested and tried to make contact with other family members on here.

I am hoping that someone has been able to access information regarding the Greek birth or parents of Nicholas as I cant find any information further back i.e his parents etc.. <3

Buy a copy of his marriage cert. If he knew his father’s name, it will be recorded on the cert
