I'm not sure but have an idea those held at Records Office do not start till 1885.

Sorry I gave you the wrong date for workhouse records. It would be from about 1821-1831 for the parish of All Saints.

1872 refers to a possible Court Case in Leicester - so perhaps 1/4 Session Records would be useful. Many thanks, Eileen

I wonder if you could answer this query for me, I have a death cert. for a James Tattersall who died in Dec.1939, the burial took place at Rupert St., have you any info on this cemetery?

Er ………Are you sure you are reading the certificate right ?

( 1.)
They do not usually put the place of burial on DEATH Certificates.

( 2.)
Rupert Street was the address of the Registrar’s Office.
For Birth Marriages & Deaths….

Was your James aged 60 on death ?

Sorry he was not on any of me data bases
for usual burial places for the City of Leicester.
Suspect he was Buried / Cremated in Gilroes Crematorium.

Thank you for replying, you've solved it for me, why I thought Rupert St. was a cemetery was because the cert. says Informant F.W.Fisher, causing the body to be buried Rupert St. I'd never seen that wording on any other death cert. Now it looks like Mr. Fisher worked at the Registry Office. I would have thought that as the death was in the General Hosp. the informant would have been someone from the family or the hospital.
Yes he was sixty at the time of his death.

Another mystery solved many thanks again for your help.

Just to put it in layman’s terms :~

causing the Body to be buried. =

which means that the person who was in charge of the Body of the deceased

OR

"Causing the body to be buried" is put on a certificate
when the informant is not known to the dead person
AND they have taken responsibility for burying the body (and the expense thereof).

Can often be an Undertaker, or possibly in your case, an Almoner at the hospital.(Which would probably make it a pauper's burial)

Today this sort of thing is done by Council Departments, who usually have a Bereavement Officer who handles the deceased's affairs and tries to find living relatives


Those who can be qualified as an informant for a death :~

DEATHS IN INSTITUTIONS: = This includes Hospitals

• (1) Any Relative of the Deceased who may be available.
• (2) The Chief (or Acting Chief) Resident Officer.
• (3) A Person present at the Death.
• (4) The Person causing the Body to be buried.

Therefore I would think that this F.W. Fisher was
in fact the Funeral Director
Who was the duty Undertaker for the General Hospital on the day.
If he was a Hospital staff then there would have been letters after his name
plus his Medical occupation would have been stated ……

Hope this makes sense ….

It caused a few heads to be scratched at the Records Office to day……

The only Baptism of a Frances b c 1766 was this one :~

But regards the ¼ Sessions 1872.

They do have FULL Indexes for all Prisoners held at Welford Road
Names Ages. Occupations & reasons for imprisonments
1872 ~24.

Plus it’s possible that the Court case made the Newspapers of the time
So we could check this out although it’s usually a bit long winded reading the Papers which are on Microfilm
But we need names ages plus the date and why he was in court for….
