Advice on Pedigree Resource File on IGI Please

ProfilePosted byOptionsPost Date

MarilynB Report 25 Jul 2009 19:59

I have traced my ancestors back through parish records to a Jasper Marchment born 1694 in Upavon, Wilts, a possible father for him is another Jasper Marchment son of William Marchment and Millicent Glasse, taking me back to around 1625

The last two generations are picked up from the Pedigree Resource File on the IGI, although cannot be checked at the Record Office as they dont hold the transcripts or the parish records themselves before 1687.

Does anyone know if there is any other way of checking the information on the IGI as I am 90% sure it is the same family, but need the extra verification.

Any advice or info would be appreciated, thanks

Marilyn

The IGI should be used as guide only, you need to see the original parish register to be sure, have you tried the family history society for the area you are researching, they usually have the PR's.

Thanks Ron, I will try that, as i say I have searched at the Record Office back to 1694 but there is no way of verifying the information on the Pedigree Resource File before that date in Upavon, just wondered where the submitter had got the information from.

Thanks again

A Pedigree Resource file is a Family Tee submitted by another member. It is no different to a tree added by another member on GR, or indeed any other site.

Thanks Roy I have found the 1694 Jasper in the actual parish records, the one before with parents William Marchment and Millicent Glasse was in the pedigree file, thanks for taking the trouble to look on the IGI

Brinsley, I wont treat that info as gospel until I can verify it, thanks.

If it gives the name and address of a submitter, it is worth making contact; I did that and received verified information.

I believe if search on Familysearch website comes up in capitals, this indicates that the information has been referenced to known and existing records. Could be wrong and stand corrected if I am.

Bishops Transcripts for Upavon dating 1625-1880 are available to view at your local LDS Family History Centre. They also have the Transcripts for Parish Records for the same period. Other files such as Land tax Assessment Records can be useful. You will need to order these and they can take upto 6 weeks or more to arrive.

Thanks Joy, didnt know you could do that, I will give it a try, I think there is an address

Brandyman, thanks for that didnt know that either, is it any LDS Family History Centre, my local one is nowhere near Upavon and Easton Royal. Do I just phone up and order them

Marilyn
Give them a ring but expect to have to go in to order the film so that you pay upfront. It is worth checking the centres website as they may hold the film you want in their own stock.
