I have hin in Blackley in 1871 too, but cannot find him on any census before that.

I believe he was Richard Loftus Shepherd baptised Pilling 11 March 1836, illegitimate son of Alice Shepherd, a servant.

Any sighting of him before 1871 much appreciated.

I did seriously consider that pair, but Alice really was a widow, having been married to James in 1851, and was living with her son who had married by then in 1871...sadly not the one.

This was the only one I could see where his occupation looked promising as he was a loom weaver.

Yes, I thought so too , but....
I think he was maybe adopted.... or his mother married and he took the husbands name.....I've followed a few leads but no result.
