I have found an ancestor on 3 different censuses, but just can't make out his Place of Birth, due to handwriting and mis-transcriptions.

He is Thomas Harding. born c.1833 and his wife is Mary Ann, born c.1836 in Honiton.

In 1861 living in Offwell Devon.
In 1871 living in Yetminster Dorset.
In 1881 she is still living in Yetminster and tho Married he is not with her, but poss. lodging with the Chivers family in Radstock Devon.
On 1891 he is widowed and living in Yetminster wirh his sons Henry and Albert.

The place appears to be something like Stock Pers, either Devon or Somerset, but transcribed as Stockport and Hock Pers., even given as his occupation of Stock Person in one case, altho obviously transcribed into the wrong column.

I've tried the usual Google and Atlases, but having no luck at all so hope someone with better eyesight or local knowledge may be able to help. All suggestions gratefully received!

Thankyou,
Sue

Have you tryed looking at old maps from the 1800's?

http://www.old-maps.co.uk/index.html

You can use this site and if they hold a map then you can use their navigation tool to zoom in and move the map,
some times they have several map choices on both scale and year's

Thankyou all so much!
I did actually reply after the first few responses, but it never appeared - I had problems writing it but it did seem to have got thro ok.

Roy - just off to look at the old maps and 1851
Reggie - re 1881, i only considered it as he was a brick maker also in 1861.
Andrew - great finds ta which look good.
Potty - not sent for any certs yet as so many of the same name marrying Mary Anns at the right time.
Ken, Kath and Thelma - all very helpful, ta.

I'm so pleased with all the info - what a great bunch of helpers!

Thanks everyone,

Sue.
