Shirley~I,m getting the hang of it Report 22 Nov 2012 22:50

I went to school for two weeks in 1939 so i could be evacuated with my two elder siblings, We lived in South East London and were evacuated to Tunbridge Wells in Kent .

I was 2 years 5plus months and I remember sitting on a ladies lap in a train. Am told it was the headmasters secretary who traveled with us.

i havent ever been able to find any records BUT i am still in touch with the daughter of the young married couple I ended up with after 2 weeks in a temporary foster home .

I was also in touch and visited regularly both her parents right up to when they passed away

Thank you for all your replies. I would like to find out more of where my father was evacuated. I know it was Loughborough with a family called Armstrong but would like to find out more so I will try the local Loughborough records office and see where that takes me. :-)

If children were in school, sometimes many pupils were sent to one area.
I know that from Folkestone / Dover area many children went to South Wales and I have seen books on display in a wartime exhibition in Dover museum, which listed which children were allocated to particular households, how long they stayed and the reason they left that address.

Hello Heather.

I too have been down this road, both I and my husband were evacuees.........
I wrote to the records office and the Library in the area where we were evacuated to.
I found my husbands and obtained his details from records kept by his billet officer.
I could not trace my family, not many records were kept. I got a lot of information regarding my area ( Bradford ) from the local newspapers .

There is an Evacuees Reunion Association you could join.they publish a magazine monthly. where you can find and trace friends and is a very informative magazine.

I've often wondered if some children became 'lost'.

If you go on to Google, and type in evacuees ww2,there are a few to click on,also the is one about Pathe News, which shows footage of some children from different areas at the railway station.
Interesting thread that one.

Good luck.
:-) :-)
Try your local library as well.

Various replies to the same question. Apparently there are no personal evacuation files at the National Archives and someone else has suggested that if any do exist locally, they may well fall under the 100 year rule.

I don't know whether these records exist but I would think the best place to ask is the County Records Office for the area you think the person in question was evacuated to or from

Does anyone know if records were kept of where children were evacuated during WW2? If so where can I access them?
