Hi all, I am slowly progressing with part of my tree and have now come to an area where ancestory is born 1830 but dont know how to progress further with research. Would be grateful for any tips.

Rebecca, could you check your dates. The heading says prior 1837 but your post says 1930 (I'm guessing that should be 1830?)

There are a variety of resources available, depending on location. Why not post details of the person you're stuck on and we'll try to point you in the right direction.

opps yes I have corrected now,

The person I am on at the moment is Evan Thomas I have a DOB of 15/10/1830 no place, was married 1865 radnorshire & Died 1909 Knighton, Radnorshire.

Just not sure how to go further back, doesn't help with a common name for wales.

some more info from census gathered, 1871 is earliest one I can find him on he was living in Llanbister, Radnorshire Area and stayed in this area unit he died.
the 1971 census also had a Jane Thomas on as a mother boarding with them.
and DOB for Evan on census's either have Llanbister or Llananno

Have you got his marriage cert Rebecca? If not I suggest you get it, as at least you will then have his father's name and occupation (assuming he knew it!).

I can't see the 1871 census you mention, but there is this which might be yours, assuming his mother's name is Jane:
