Hi everyone,
I have been looking through the Poll Books for 1868 and I'm a bit confused.
There are 4 columns at the left of each page with the headings P S B R, and I can't find out what they mean. There are various entries in these columns and they are
_ + (a number) or Dead. If anyone can help me to find what they mean, I would be most grateful.

Regards,
Keith :-S

From the examples I have seen it looks like the initials are those of the candidates. The - represents a split vote where the voter votes for two candidates and the + is for a plumper who uses both his votes for one candidate. Dead means the person was on the roll but was dead at the time of the election. Not sure about the number without knowing what place it was, maybe the voter's age?

This is a good reference for poll books with links to some that are available on line.

The numbers are possibly the vote totals.

Incidentally if you google plumpers and splitters do so together. Do not google just plumpers. ;-)

Thanks to all who replied.
I was looking at UK Poll Book Records with Ancestry.com
Yes it was the Initial letter of the Candidates surname, I Paged back to the beginning of the book and there it was! Thanks Ken for your explanation.
I'll have a look on Google as well.

Keith :-D
